As a dog owner one question I’m commonly asked is “where do your dogs sleep at night?” and my answer usually results in one of two responses from people – a huge smile usually followed by a remark such as “aw that’s so cute” OR a sheer look of disgust and horror that I would allow my dirty, hairy, smelly dogs anywhere near my bed. This is then followed by another twenty questions about my cleaning routine; how often do I bath the dogs, how often do I change the bed covers and clean the bedroom etc etc (for the record the bed covers are changed minimum of twice a week and the washing machine is constantly going!) And of course there’s the inevitable question of where do my partner and I fit amongst the pack….it’s like a game of tetris every night I can assure you!
While many people are quick to point out the negatives of allowing a dog to share a bed with their owners, did you know that there are actually some benefits to this? Here’s my top five reasons why letting your dog sleep in your bed is a good thing –
- The pack habit – dogs are descended from wolves and just like wolves, dogs have a pack mentality. This means that it’s natural for them to sleep together in a sort of cuddle huddle and they want you to be a part of it!
- It makes dogs happy – dogs love to be near their owners at all times (unless your dog is a grumpy old man dog like Simba!) and allowing them to sleep with or near you helps form a stronger bond between you. Having the opportunity to rest with their owners and be near their human’s scent is a calming and comforting feeling to canines.
- They make us feel safe – one of the many reasons why people decide to get a dog is for a feeling of safety. Dogs are loyal by nature and will protect their humans in any situation. I always believe that dogs sleep with one ear open and they are super quick to awaken and alert you of a strange noise during the night (even if it is just the sound of a dripping tap…thanks Shade!).
- Helps relieve stress & anxiety – research has shown that dogs can be a great therapy for those suffering with stress and anxiety. Therefore snuggling up with your dog at night can make you feel calm and relaxed and it may also help you sleep better.
- Reduces symptoms of depression – again research has shown that dogs can reduce the symptoms of depression in people. Dogs provide an unconditional love and having your four legged friend beside you at night can provide great comfort and can help to relieve those feelings of despair.
Deciding where your dog sleeps is really a personal preference and as with everything in life there are pros and cons…I’m just a little bit biased as you may have guessed from reading this!
